main artistic work and collaborations

A founding member of the Zambra dance co., the first in Portugal to create Middle Eastern fusion dance, she also cofounded the Pálinka dance co., the first Portuguese company to showcase a repertoire of Romani dances, as well as the dance and  music group Gadjè. She was a member of the Danza Duende Co. Salamantras, founded by Yumma Mudra, since its inception, and was directed by A. Michel Raji in the unique project Saphir, a choreosophical exploration for six dancers based on the zodiac.

 

A guest dancer with the companies Luna Flamenca (Spain) and Adelante (France), and in the shows ‘Êxtase’ by Carolina Fonseca and ‘Voyage à Dos d’Élephant’ by Tarikavalli, she has likewise collaborated as a soloist with the music groups Ciganos d’Ouro (Portugal, Macao), Les Aminches (France), Roby Lakatos Ensemble (Switzerland), Jovica Jovic Balkan Orkestar (Italy), Universus Ensemble (Portugal) and with the Portuguese neofolk band Dazkarieh, in the latter as a dancer, percussionist and backing vocalist.

Mónica has also taken part in several social inclusion projects, such as 'Daqui Pra Cá', supported by the Gulbenkian Foundation, as well as ‘Literacy for Democracy’, part of the Active Citizens Programme.​ Producer of the 2nd Duende International Dance Festival (Serpa, 2013), in 2014 she presented her first solo work, LEVANTE, at the Basilica of Our Lady of Avioth (France), in 2015 she opened Espaço 9, a studio for dance, music, yoga and martial arts, in Lisbon; in 2016, she created OFFERINGS FOR TARA, specifically for the 3rd Danza Duende Festival; and in 2018, the showcased her newest solo piece ARAWI, to mark the inauguration of the University of Coreosophy in Milan.

 

Within the context of her student's recitals, she has created LUME (2015), ONCE WE WERE BIRDS (2016), GIPSY DUENDE CELEBRATION (2017), and participated in the recital of Metiss'Art Danza e Bennessere in 2019 in Milan, with her Italian students. ​ Mónica currently performs with the Companhia Rueda Flamenca, in Portugal, on a regular basis.
